BIRTHDAY BLOG!

Hey girls!  Hoping you all had amazing holidays!!  I absolutely loved going home for Christmas!  Spending time with my family and friends was such a blast!  Coming back from the holidays to Winnipeg though, made this week so much fun!  It was like reuniting with my second family – my incredible team!  The best things about this week for me?  MY BIRTHDAY!  That’s right, I’m officially nineteen!  Although I have to admit, that particular number doesn’t excite me… it’s not a very pretty number.

* Confession.  I am a special person… when I hear numbers (and letters, days of the week, months of the year) I immediately see a color.

For example – 1 is grey; 2 is pink; 3 is aqua blue; 4 is red; 5 is darker blue; 6 is orange; 7 is green; 8 is deep purple; 9 is brown; 10 is yellow.  When you combine the numbers however – like to make the number 45 – I see red and blue separately, they don’t combine and make purple.  So some numbers are prettier than others to me.

I don’t remember a time when I ever didn’t see colors when I hear numbers… and up until this Christmas I really just assumed everyone else did it too.  However in a conversation at Christmas with my family about turning nineteen and my making a comment about how I’m excited for my birthday but not to turn nineteen since I don’t like the color brown… this brought on a lot of questions and confusion and strange looks…  Who knew?  Then I thought I was the only one and something was weird about me!  BUT my sister’s boyfriend, Steve, ended up looking it up that night and texted me the next day to google ‘Synesthesia’… and it’s real!

“Synesthesia is an involuntary joining in which the real information of one sense is accompanied by a perception in another sense. In addition to being involuntary, this additional perception is regarded by the synesthete as real, often outside the body, instead of imagined in the mind's eye.-R. Cytowic, "Synesthesia: A Union of the Senses" Springer-Verlag, NY (p.1)  I also learned that apparently one in twenty-six people have it!… *

So anyone, despite nineteen not being a beautiful number in my mind… my birthday was very special!  I woke up to a dozen notes left up all over the house for me by my beautiful roommate, Kylagh.  And then we went to the office and nothing really special happened, I was just really happy.  My birthday always fills me with joy and a feeling of … I’m special.  Regardless what happens on that day, God just really blesses me with happiness all day!  After the office Jessica and I went to this great place, The Cupcake Corner, here in Winnipeg (I LOVE cupcakes!) and we picked up a bunch of cupcakes for all of us at the house and we just… sat around with cupcakes and glasses of cold milk and laughed and it was just such a great birthday!  They even made me a giant card full of sweet things being said. And before bed, Natalie and I watched Bride Wars, one of my favorite movies… I love best friendships and weddings…!  So it was a really great day for me this week… hoping all you girls enjoyed January fifth too!  (Because I feel great when others enjoy my birthday…!)

Much love & Happy Birthday!
